Discovering the Art of Wild Clay Pottery at Spirit Tree Farms
Hello, fellow creatives and nature enthusiasts!
Recently, my husband Dave and I stumbled upon an incredible opportunity right in our backyard at Spirit Tree Farms in Northwest Georgia. During our visit to the Tubac Art Festival in Arizona, we met an inspiring artist who crafted wind chimes from the very clay of our hometown, Ringgold, Georgia. Imagine our surprise and delight!
This serendipitous encounter sparked an idea to explore our land and its resources. With a desire to connect more deeply with the earth and tap into its natural bounty, we set out on a little adventure. Imagine how thrilled we were to discover an abandoned ant hill composed of tiny, beautifully churned up beads of clay.
Armed with the clay from the ant hill and sand from the Chickamauga creek’s beach area on our property, we embarked on the task of creating our own wild clay. It’s a fairly simple process that we documented step by step in a video, blending ancient techniques inspired by Andy Ward’s Ancient Pottery channel. Guided by the rhythm of nature, my goal is to craft a sourdough rising bowl that embodies the spirit of our land.
I’ve embedded the video below so you can join me on this exciting journey of crafting wild clay pottery. Watch as I crush, sift, and mold these natural materials into something special!
Embracing Nature’s Gifts
The art of pottery is a dance with nature itself, and creating something beautiful out of humble, earthy materials is incredibly fulfilling. Each piece crafted carries its own story, infused with the energy of the land from which it came.
Whether you’re a seasoned potter or a curious beginner, I encourage you to explore the resources around you. Who knows what treasures you might find in your own backyard?
